September 2010: During a recent Volkssport 10K walk the topic of walking holidays in Britain came up in conversation. I thought it might be of interest to do a couple of things:
The Cumbria Way through England's Lake District National Park is a popular long distance hiking trail, one of many that criss-cross England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland. Factor in overnight accommodations along the way at hundreds of conveniently situated inns, guesthouses, and farmhouse B&Bs, and baggage transfer between each overnight stop, and you have the perfect ingredients for a self-guided walking holiday. To get an idea of how extensive these walking holidays have become check out Discovery Travel's website. Back in 1999 they were a young company pretty much limited to the north of England; today they have grown a bit as you'll see. I have always wanted to repeat the Cumbria Way walk: for Jennie to experience it; and for me to complete it.

Another walking holiday operator of note is Contours Walking Holidays.
